Council Tax….am I paying
too much?
• Remarkably, many people who receive a Liability Order
for unpaid Council Tax are unaware that they could be eligible
for a reduction in their bills. From recently published data,
nearly 3 million people eligible for reductions do not claim.
As an example, the following situations would qualify for a reduction.
• If you live alone, you are automatically
entitled to a 25% discount.
• If you are living with anyone who is exempt from paying,
such as children under the age of 18 or students.
• You may qualify for a reduction if your income, savings,
and investments are £16,000 or less.
• If you have savings over
£16,000 you can still receive benefit if you are aged 60
or over and getting the “guarantee
credit” element of pension credit.
• You may be eligible for the second
adult rebate if you share your home with one or more adults….not
your spouse or partner who cannot contribute towards the council
tax. For example: the rebate for second adult on Income Support,
Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance or Pension Credit is
25% of your bill !!
• You may be able to get the second
adult rebate even if you do not normally get council tax
benefit…but you cannot get both.
Your income and saving will not affect the rebate, as it is base
on the others person’s circumstances.
You should contact your local authority to
request an Application Form.
