How does ANPR know if my
car is untaxed or uninsured?
Since 2005, all garages undertaking MOT’s, now provide a
computer generated MOT Test Certificate that provides details
of your car to include, the make and model, colour, mileage, and
most importantly the chassis number.
If you have recently taken your car for an MOT test, you will
possibly know that as soon as the MOT is completed…and hopefully
passes…you will have to wait 10-15 minutes because the information
on your car is then sent to DVLA where their computers will match
your vehicle details with their computer system to establish
if the car is either cloned or stolen etc.
DVLA’s computer system can then be updated to record the
date and expiry of your new MOT.
When you insure your car, your underwriter
will input your insurance details on the Motor Insurance Database,
which in turn is linked to DVLA. For details of your car tax….this
is held by DVLA’s own computers.
A problem that has recently made the national newspapers is that
apparently thousand of motorists have been stopped by ANPR vehicles
and accused of driving without insurance because their underwriters
are too slow in updating records. Insurance companies are given
14 days to put the renewal data onto the Motor Insurance Database,
and the Police Data is updated from this source every 14 days.
If drivers renew insurance policies just before expiry, their
vehicle might still register as uninsured
for up to one month.
Therefore, our advice would be to ensure that, if possible, you
keep a photocopy of your insurance certificate with you for a
least a month after its renewal.
